Mayor's Message

In just one week, on Thursday 11 September, Australia will mark R U OK? Day a day that reminds us of the life-changing power of a simple question: “Are you okay?”

Here in Canterbury-Bankstown, we pride ourselves on being one of the most diverse, supportive and tight-knit communities in the country.

But still, many are struggling – and sometimes all it takes is one caring conversation to make a world of difference.

Nearly 50% of Australians will experience mental illness during their lifetime. In June 2024, over 72% of people reported high levels of emotional distress.

But those who are regularly asked if they’re okay report feeling more supported, connected and cared for.

This is a call to action for all of us.

In the lead-up to R U OK? Day, I’m inviting everyone in our City, including local businesses, schools, sporting clubs, places of worship, community groups and households, to step up and host an event, start a conversation or share a message of support.

Hold a morning tea, wear yellow, decorate your shopfront, post on social media, invite a mental health speaker – whatever you do, make it visible. Show people in your life that they are not alone.

You don’t need to be an expert to check in with someone. You just need to be there and listen.

Visit ruok.org.au for free resources, conversation tips and event ideas to help you get started.

Let’s work together to make sure no one in Canterbury-Bankstown ever feels they have to struggle alone. Let's lead by example – not just on R U OK? Day, but every day.

Regards,

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek
